. Blackthorn

Yellow in colour with a soft apple nose, this is a refreshing, crisp cider. Delicate in flavour and quite effervescent, Blackthorn is a real thirst quencher on warm autumn days.

Bulmers Original

Yellow-orange in colour with a rich fruit aroma, much more so than the Blackthorn. A hint of flower augments the soft apple nose. Very fullin the mouth, with some sweetness. Good length to the finish. This is more of a sipper than a quencher!

Peelers Acai Pomegranate
United States +735558
Exotic and tropical flavour, right on the edge between sweet fruit
and delicate orange blossom flower. This is a touch sweet, but still very nicely done. Acai is a palm fruit very popular in Brazil. The Peeler "Orange Squeeze" is also very good and worth seeking out.

Spire Mountain Dark and Dry Draft Cider
Washington +730878
Nut brown in colour. Low in the "spritz" but big in the mouth, with lots of flavour. Along with the apple, there are molasses and brown sugar in the flavour (but not too much). Good length. Coupled with Blackthorn and Bulmers Original, you have an excellent example of the range of characteristics cider producers can achieve.

Essential wine aerator “Vinturi”
First it was Eisch with “breathable” wine glasses. The technology claimed to make good wine, after just three minutes in the glass, taste like it had received properly decanted aeration. I was skeptical and conducted comparative tastings with Riedel glassware. Gotta say…Eisch proved its point. But who wants to replace a whole set of Riedel? Well, here’s the inexpensive alternative. Keep the Riedels and use a Vinturi. Simply hold the Vinturi over a glass and pour the wine through. Yup, it’s that simple. The device mixes the proper amount of air and allows the wine to breathe instantly. This is the first time I have included a product in “Discoveries.” A discovery it was! Try it, you’ll like it!

Instant Wine Refresher “Ravi”
This is only the second time I have included a product in Discoveries. During Vinexpo, I was introduced to a miniature, Canadian-made instant wine chiller called the Ravi. The device is kept in the freezer until it is ready to be used, and is then inserted in the top of a wine bottle. As the wine is poured it is chilled as it passes through the stainless steel tube inside the device. The slower one pours – and hence the more time the wine spends in the Ravi – the colder the wine that is poured out. An air inlet allows for smooth pouring. This is a brilliant device, easy to use, easy to clean and it really does the job. It is taking off in Europe. Try it, marvel at its brilliance, and be proud it’s Canadian. The perfect stocking stuffer for the oenophile on your list.
